cicada n., pl. ci-ca-das or ci-ca-dae (-de).
Any of various insects of the family Cicadidae, having a broad head,
membranous wings, and in the male a pair of resonating organs that
produce a characteristic high-pitched, droning sound. Also called cicala.
[Middle English, from Latin cicada.]cicada (si-ka'da', -kä-) n., pl. ci-ca-das or ci-ca-dae (-de). The general insect order is homoptera.
homopterous adj.
Of or belonging to the order Homoptera, which includes the cicadas, aphids, and scale insects, characterized by sucking mouthparts. [From New Latin Homoptera, order name. See HOMOPTERAN.]
