EXPERIMENT 7 - CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA, LE CHATLIER'S PRINCIPLE

CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM

Blue anhydrous Cobalt(II)chloride and Pink hydrated Cobalt(II)chloride

Purpose

To demonstrate several interesting chemical reactions at equilibrium.

When the equilibrium is disturbed, the system will react so that the changes are offset and the system will return to equilibrium. (Le Chatlier's Principle) For example, if a product is removed, the system will react to produce more product and return to equilibrium. If a reactant is removed, the system will react to produce more reactant (the reaction goes backwards).

The reactions which will be studied are the Chromate Ion-Dichromate Ion Equilibrium, weak acid-weak base Equilibrium (Acetic Acid (Vinegar) and Sodium Acetate Equilibrium, the Iron-Thiocyanate Equilibrium, the Cobalt chloride-Hydrated Cobalt chloride Equilibrium and saturated sodium chloride and saturated barium chromate solutions.
