Lecture Notes

These brief lecture notes have been saved as Adobe Acrobat PDF files and it is necessary to use the free Adobe Acrobat reader to read them. The reader may be downloaded from Adobe for both IBM compatibles and Mac (and recently for the Sun) or from this server for Mac only. On the Mac use the installer and in Netscape check that the helper applications in the preferences under the options menu are correctly entered. Check the Adobe instructions for the correct settings.

Currently, a password is required to read the notes. Printing is allowed, but the notes are incomplete and there are errors and omissions-especially in later chapters. In some places there are "notes" which may be read. Additional comments are welcome - just open the notes and add additional notes. Remember to save. If a note is not present and you would like to add one go to the page of interest and click on the note tool in the toolbar. It is next to the little box with abc in it.

Audio

The other feature of these notes is that the lectures have been recorded and compressed using the RealAudio encoder. This affects a compression of the audio file by a factor from 16 to 20. The RealAudio technique also means that the audio file is not downloaded to the computer but is played. Another very usefull feature is that portions of an audio file may be skipped so that only those parts of the audio that are desired may be listened to. The listener may also pause, continue, backup, skip ahead and quit. Furthermore, several audio files may be placed into a "Playlist" and may be accessed either in order or as desired.

In a Mac under Netscape go to the options menu and select preferences. Scroll to the helper applications select New and enter the following

  1. Mime type: audio
  2. Extentions: ra,ram
  3. Subtype: x-pn-realaudio
  4. File type: PNRM
  5. Action: Launch Application
Go to browse and find the RealAudio application and click on it. Click OK. Save the preferences at the bottom of the Options menu (Save Options).
  • Follow this procedure again with the change x-pa-realaudio. Perhaps I messed up, but the files seen to look for the x-pa-realaudio subtype. You need both.

Again, go to browse and find the RealAudio application and click on it. Click OK. Save the preferences at the bottom of the Options menu (Save Options).

    Slides

Since the lecturer uses overhead projection slides these have been included with the audio menu for viewing along with listening if desired. These slides have been made from the Texture produced lecture notes as illustrations (as gifs) and so downloading may be slow depending on the computer system.
