CHEMISTRY 22 SEMESTER II 1996

Professor Baird - Section C

January 1996

  • Chemistry 22 is the second semester course in the sequence Chem 21-22. Students who have had one semester of physical/inorganic chemistry are welcome. We shall follow Chem 21 in a number of aspects (e.g., text, topic arrangement). There are two lecture sections. Professor Sweigart will have the I hour and Professor Baird the C hour. As much as possible, a common syllabus will be used and the lectures correlated; however sections C and I are separate courses. There will be what are called Concept Tests that are accessed and answered on the internet. You may work in teams of up to four on these simple, conceptual problems. Homework problems for Section C will be given at the start of the lecture for each chapter and answers posted on the Chemistry 22 Sec. C WWW Home Page under the appropriate heading. Try to obtain solutions to the homework by yourself first. If you have difficulty it is correct for you to seek help from classmates, from T.A.s, or from faculty . Homework will not be graded, but it is to your advantage to do the problems in order to understand the material and because homework like problems will be included as exam questions. Exam answers will be placed on the Chemistry 22 Sec. C WWW Home Page. There will be three hour exams and a final exam. The hour exams constitute 300 pts, the Lab 300 pts, the final 300 pts and Concept Tests 100 pts of the grade. There will be no make up hour exams.

    LABORATORY:

  • Since chemistry is an experimental science there is a laboratory associated with the course. The laboratory portion of the course will be administered by Professor Steim. The laboratories are held in Metcalf Chemistry Lab on Monday thru Friday afternoons. Each student will be assigned a T.A. who will be available to answer questions about the lecture and the lab experiments. Lab manuals may be purchased at the Brown Bookstore. Laboratory check-in begins the week of January 31st. Prelab lectures begin at 12 noon in Metcalf Auditorium.
