Dear Andrew:

According to your revised schedule you should be at, or past, Damascus, VA as I write this. You should have had a package waiting at Damascus. Is there a post office at Springer Mt. GA because I will send a letter there if there is? I will try to look it up since there is no zip in the Appalachian Trail Databook. Otherwise phone me at work or late at home. I did get your letter from Tyro. Had all the photos developed and printed and assume from your comment from Pearisburg that you would prefer that I not send them for your comments. If this is too big a burden on the trail I will not send them, but it is interesting for us city folks to know what the images are images of. So, let me know. Arrival dates at your various mail drops, or other stops are of interest.

I went to that Stone House Inn in Little Compton, the place where Allison had her wedding, for a cheap dinner. A couple of women were sitting behind me and noticed the laptop and something I was writing to you. We struck up a conversation and I showed them your pictures on the web page. There was the photo of you at the start and then the self-portrait taken in NH, or Maine. Their comment was that you had lost weight. That was early on in your adventure so be mindful that you have to take in as much energy as you burn-you know that. But the other dietary factor (physiological factor) is that you also have to consume essential foods. Essential amino acids (those with sulfur-sulfur bonds that the body does not make) and vitamins. Well, you know this too, but here are a few one-a-day vitamins and it does not hurt to take too many (excepting vitamin A). Better too many than too few. Also the so-called minimum daily requirement may well be an underestimate. Linus Pauling thought so with regard to vitamin C, but he probably went overboard in the other direction. That is my vitamin and essential amino acid lecture for the moment. Low levels of these things could have effects on appetite and who knows what else. Here also is some dried fruit and some kind of energy bar for variety. The dehydrated foods are at their end since EMS, etc. feel the season is finished!

I am no longer Chair of the Faculty, but Past Chair. Some pressure is off. I probably will not have to make any speeches, but there are still issues and faculty who are getting a raw deal and The Three Officers (kind of like the Three Tenors!) will have to deal with those. The outdoor tennis is winding down. The hard core group of about 12 had a very good tennis summer. I will miss the four days per week exercise and will have to make some substitutions. Had some very vigorous matches often playing more than a couple of hours from 5 to 7:30 pm. Needless to say, I was tired, but rebounded the following day. Setting up a group for tennis Friday eve 7 pm to 8:30 pm with some pretty good players.

I am on sabbatical, as I may have mentioned, but am teaching that environmental lab course. I figure that since I am on sabbatical I do not need to attend departmental meetings, or make up departmental exams. So far so good.

Love,

Dad
